In 2007 we discovered a little slice of heaven along the Palisades of the Kentucky River. With only the confidence that we had found something special, we made a tremendous leap of faith and purchased the farm from the Banks family. We are not farmers by trade, but have it in our blood. Each of our fathers grew up on farms, one in Kentucky and one in Cuba. We have inherited an appreciation of what land can provide, the care and respect it requires, and the responsibility to protect it and insure its health.
The 86 acre Sunset Farm starts along the banks of the Kentucky River and rises up the palisades to fertile pasture lands atop a field of limestone. The land is littered with history as it was the location of many battles between the Shawnee Indians and Daniel Boone. It more recently served as a thriving tobacco farm producing a premium crop until 2005. The varying slope, exposure, and soil structure of the land provides some unique opportunities to establish small lots of crafted grapes and alternative crops.
As Kentucky continues to transition away from an economy supported by tobacco and coal, we find new opportunities to help write the next chapter in our land's story. New laws and incentives designed to nurture growth in emerging areas of agriculture are revealing some exciting possibilities. Already the Bourbon capital of the world, Central Kentucky is proving its ability to produce an inventory of premium craft crops. We will also introduce our neighbors to many small crafted wines from families around the country who share our passion and respect for quality.
